The Golden State Warriors are looking to retain their core.

“According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, the 스포츠토토 Warriors have begun contract extension talks with Klay Thompson (guard, 6-foot-9, 198 pounds).

Thompson’s contract expires at the end of the upcoming 2023-2024 season. He is nearing the end of the five-year, $189 million extension he signed in the summer of 2019. With his contract ending after the season, Golden State will need to prepare a new deal for him. That means extending his contract.

Golden State re-signed Draymond Green this summer (four years, $100 million). They’re hoping that Thompson’s deal will be similar in size to Green’s. This will have a significant impact on their financial management going forward. They’ve been spending a lot. Golden State was a big spender with Kevin Durant (Phoenix). They had to pay a lot of luxury tax.

With Durant’s departure in the summer of 2019, the Warriors were keen to maintain their cap space. After his departure, they gave Thompson a contract worth around $40 million per year. It’s a big deal, even though Thompson was injured in the 2019 Finals and missed the 2019-2020 season. It’s a solid deal for a franchise star.

Thompson missed two seasons due to injury. He returned to action in the 2021-2022 season. Despite struggling to get back into the swing of things, he still managed to average over 20 points a game. For the first time since entering the NBA, his single-season average of 40% from three-point range was broken (.385), but he made up for it last season, once again averaging over 40% and contributing over 20 points per game.

He started 69 games last season. After starting just 32 games in his first season back, he showed his most durable side last season. He averaged 21.9 points (.436 .412 .879), 4.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 33 minutes per game. However, his ups and downs in the Western Conference Semifinals against the Los Angeles Lakers left something to be desired. He averaged just nine points in the final three games of the series.

Meanwhile, Golden State’s confirmed salary total for the 2024-2025 season is over $170 million. It’s still early, but they’re approaching the luxury tax line for the 2024-2025 season. If Thompson’s extension is added, Golden State’s spending will only increase. The luxury tax is inevitable. The variable is Chris Paul’s contract, which, if not guaranteed, could drastically lower the payroll total.
