 Ahn Se-young (21, Samsung Life Insurance), world number one in badminton women’s singles and winner of last week’s World Championships, advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2023 China Open Badminton Championships.

 Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jeong, who won the World Championships mixed doubles, also advanced to the quarterfinals.

Ahn Se-young advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating world number 11 Wang Zhiyi (China) 2-0 (21-14 22-20) in the women’s singles round of 16 match held in Changzhou, China on the 7th (Korean time).

With the win on this day, Ahn Se-young took the lead against Wang Ziyi with 7 wins and 1 loss in 8 matches.

The opponent in the quarterfinals is Han Yue (China), ranked 9th in the world. Ahn Se-young is ahead of Hanwe with 5 wins and 1 loss in 6 matches.

Ahn Se-young will attempt to win her fourth consecutive tournament, following her previous wins at the Korea Open and Japan Open in July and the World Championships last month.

Before the match, Ahn Se-young gave an interview to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and expressed her feelings about winning the World Championships last week. 

“It’s been a while since the World Championships, so she’s still sore,” she said. “It was my dream to win the World Championships. Little by little, she’s getting used to the fact that she’s a world champion.” said.

She revealed that Ahn Se-young doesn’t want to feel pressured. 

“A lot of people recognize me and it can be stressful,” he said. “But it depends on your perspective.

Rather than feeling stressed, I try to enjoy it.”

The world championship mixed doubles winner, Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jeong, struggled to reach the quarterfinals.

Seungjae Seo and Yujeong Chae, ranked 5th in the world in mixed doubles, defeated the pair of Kyohei Yamashita and Naru Shinoya (Japan), ranked 19th in the world, 2-1 (8-21 21-18 21-19) in the round of 16 on this day.

Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jeong, who advanced to the quarterfinals after a close full game, will face the world’s No. 1 pair, Zheng Siwei and Huang Ya-chong (China), in the quarterfinals.

Zheng Si-wei and Huang Ya-chong are the opponents they faced in the finals of the World Championships last week. 

Attention is being paid to whether Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jeong will be able to defeat the world’s No. 1 pair for two consecutive weeks.

Seungjae Seo said she would forget about winning the World Championships and focus on the following competitions.

 He said, “Winning the world championship is now a past thing,” and added, “Important games like the Asian Games and the Olympics are approaching.

Meanwhile, Kim Ga-eun, ranked 18th in the world in women’s singles, was eliminated after losing to world number 2 Akane Yamaguchi (Japan) in the round of 16 on this day. 

The mixed doubles team of Won-ho Kim and Na-eun Jeong, ranked 6th in the world, were also eliminated in the round of 16 after losing to the pair of Cheon Tang-je and Toe Wei (Malaysia), ranked 11th in the world.
