English Premier League (EPL) side Everton have sacked their ‘winless’ manager and are reportedly eyeing a former England international as their successor.
“Everton’s high-profile new owner Dan Friedkin is considering former England manager Gareth Southgate as a possible replacement,” British media outlet GiveMeSports reported on Thursday (June 24).
The Friedkin Group reached an agreement in principle to take over Everton on April 19, leaving the future of current manager Sean Dyche unclear. Dyche, who took over in January 2023, has had a poor start to the season (1 win, 4 losses, 19th place). He has yet to win his first league game and is under fire.
Southgate is currently a free agent. He resigned as manager of the England national team this summer. He stepped down after the team failed to win the Euro 2024 tournament, losing to Spain in the final.
The Friedkin Group sees Southgate as an ambitious choice. However, a “decision” on Dyche’s successor has not yet been made.
“The Friedkin Group is expected to make a final decision after finalizing the Everton takeover process,” GiveMeSports reported.
The Friedkin Group has already invested £200 million to acquire Everton, but the process was delayed during the initial period of exclusive negotiations.
However, the deal has not been abandoned and final negotiations are underway.
“Southgate earned £5 million a year as manager of the England national team,” said GiveMeSports. “Dyche has lost the support of the fans due to poor results in recent years, especially criticized for his attacking play and ability to manage the game. If the Friedkin Group chooses Southgate, we can expect to see a new tactical approach from Everton.”
Southgate took over as England manager on an interim basis in September 2016 and was named permanent manager in November of the same year.
In his seven years in charge of the national team, 파워볼실시간 Southgate has won 49, drawn 19, and lost 13 of his 81 matches. His winning percentage is around 60.5 percent, which is among the best of any English national team manager.
Southgate led England to the quarterfinals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The team lost to Croatia and failed to reach the final, but it was England’s best result since 1966. He also led the team to the 2020 Euros, where they finished as runners-up, losing to Italy on penalties in the final.
Under his guidance, England has also been a consistent performer in the UEFA Nations League.
They finished third in the 2019 edition of the competition, showing that they can compete with the European giants. Southgate has also helped develop a number of young players. Players such as Phil Foden, Mason Mount, and Xherdan Shaqiri have all excelled in his system.
Although he stepped down as manager after failing to qualify for Euro 2024, England consistently performed well on the international stage during his tenure.
“Southgate has a proven track record of international success in charge of the England national team,” says GiveMeSports. “However, Southgate’s appointment has not been finalized. The Friedkin Group is leaving open the possibility of giving Dyche a chance after the deal is finalized.”
